기획의도 및 컨셉트
화이트 큐브 공간에 세라믹 오브제로 채워진 전시 임재현 작가의 <SPROUT>전은 전통 백자에 대한 작가의 새로운 현대적 해석이다. 작가는 이번 전시를 통해 전통 백자와 현대적 기법의 융합을 선보이며, 관람객들이 세라믹 예술의 새로운 가능성을 느끼기를 기대한다고 전했다.
임재현 작가는 3D 프로그램을 통해 주름의 모양을 설계하고, 액체 도자기 혼합물을 틀에 부어 형태를 만드는 슬립캐스팅 기법으로 작품을 제작한다. 각 작품은 반복적인 형태와 변형, 가마의 예측 불가능한 변화 등을 통해 다양한 결과를 보여주며, 이러한 과정은 관람객이 개인적인 감정을 떠올리게 만든다.
Unfold Series
임재현 작가의 Unfold Series는 2024년 일본의 아라타 나가노 교수와 협력하여 진행한 티 프로젝트에서 출발했다. 작가는 사용성이 떨어져도 괜찮으니 자신의 작업을 보여달라는 요청을 받아 다완을 제작하게 되었다. 실생활 용품을 제작하는 것은 처음이었기에, 임 작가는 형태와 사이즈에 대한 사전 조사를 진행하였고, 그 결과 Unfold Series의 다완들이 탄생했다.
아라타 나가노 교수는 이 다완의 디자인에 대해 뾰족하게 튀어나온 부분이 다소 불편해 보일 수 있지만, 사용자를 배려한 요소가 돋보인다고 평가했다. 그는 말차를 갈 때 둥근 형태가 필수적이며, 임 작가의 다기 사이즈와 형태가 이를 잘 충족한다고 강조했다.
이 프로젝트를 계기로 임 작가는 실용성을 염두에 둔 작업을 지속적으로 이어가고 있으며, 현재 CN갤러리 3층에서는 작가의 잔들을 전시하고 있다.
Concept and intent
The exhibition <SPROUT> by artist Lim Jae-hyun features ceramic pieces in a white cube space, offering a fresh take on traditional white porcelain. Lim aims to blend traditional techniques with modern artistry, inviting visitors to explore new possibilities in ceramic art.
Using 3D programs, Lim designs wrinkled shapes and employs slip-casting by pouring liquid clay into molds. Each piece showcases unique outcomes through repetitive forms, transformations, and the kiln’s unpredictable effects, evoking personal feelings in the audience.
Unfold Series
Lim Jaehyeon's Unfold Series started in 2024 as part of a tea project in collaboration with Professor Arata Nagano from Japan. Lim was asked to create a tea bowl, focusing on showcasing his work, even if it meant sacrificing some usability. Since this was his first time making practical items, Lim conducted thorough research on shape and size, leading to the creation of the Unfold Series tea bowls.
Professor Nagano commented that while the pointed features of the bowls might look a bit uncomfortable, they show thoughtful design for users. He noted that a rounded shape is essential for grinding matcha, and praised how Lim's bowl size and shape effectively meet this requirement.
This project has inspired Lim to continue creating with practicality in mind, and you can currently find a collection of his cups on display at CN Gallery, 3rd floor.
