Choi Duk Hyu
Choi Duk Hyu is a Western-style painter and independence activist born in Hongseong, Chungcheongnam-do. In 1943, he graduated from the Western Painting Department of Tokyo School of Fine Arts in Japan. After being conscripted as a student soldier, he escaped and later served in the Korean Liberation Army.
After Korea’s liberation, he taught and mentored younger artists at Seoul National University, Hongik University, and Kyung Hee University. From 1966, he served as a professor at Kyung Hee University and also held the position of dean of the College of Education. Beginning with an exhibition at the Dong-A Department Store Gallery in 1950, he held solo exhibitions at venues such as the National Public Information Center (1963), Shinsegae Gallery (1973), and Lotte Museum of Art (1989). He also participated in the 1970 Osaka Expo and the 1981 exhibition “Korea’s Nature Through the Eyes of a Western Painter” at Deoksugung Museum. After his death, retrospective exhibitions were held at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts (2003) and the Seoul Museum of Art (2011). He received honors including the Order of Civil Merit (Patriotic Medal) and the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Moran Medal). A memorial hall dedicated to him was later established in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, commemorating his artistic legacy.
Choi Duk Hyu embraced the formal language of Western expressionism and modernism, reinterpreting it through Korean landscapes such as mountains, cities, and ports. Through explorations that move between three-dimensional form and flatness, along with his use of color, he created a distinctive body of work that fused externally introduced visual language with Korean sensibilities.
