Exhibition Introduction
이번 전시는 충남문화관광재단-주한 슬로바키아 문화관광 교류협력 선언을 기반으로 진행되는 슬로바키아 국제문화교류 기획 초대 전시입니다. 슬로바키아 대표 일러스트레이션 작가 Peter Uchnár를 초청하여 중유럽 현대미술을 소개하고 향후, 슬로바키아에도 충남의 예술을 알릴 수 있는 국제문화교류의 큰 의미가 있는 전시입니다.
Peter Uchnár는 슬로바키아를 대표하는 일러스트레이션 작가로 「걸리버 여행기」, 「피터팬」 등 세계적인 고전문학의 삽화와 표지 작업을 통해 널리 알려져 있습니다. 특히, BIB(브라티슬라바 일러스트레이션 비엔날레) 황금사과상과 ‘슬로바키아에서 가장 아름다운 책상’을 4번이나 수상한 유럽 일러스트레이션계의 주요 작가입니다. 작가의 작품은 삽화와 회화, 판화적 기법이 결합 된 독창적인 화풍을 통해 몽환적이고 환상적인 서사 세계를 현대적인 시각 언어로 보여줍니다.
무엇보다, 국내에서 접하기 어려운 중유럽 특유의 미학적 감각과 서사적 세계를 보여주며 정교한 묘사력을 바탕으로 ‘리얼리즘’과 인간의 심연을 파고드는 ‘환상성’이 기묘하게 공존하는 독자적인 작품력을 느낄 수 있습니다. 작가의 작품에서는 중력을 거스르는 유동성, 왜곡된 시공간, 몽환적인 배경은 관람객으로 하여금 익숙한 현실에서 한 걸음 벗어나, 잊고 있던 무의식으로 빠져들게 만들어 줍니다.
본 전시는 슬로바키아 현대미술을 국내에 소개하는 것을 넘어 충남-슬로바키아 간 예술교류 네크워크 형성과 중유럽 문화예술교류 거점 확보를 통해 향후, 다양한 국제적 작가들과 충남 예술의 동시대적 문화를 이끌어가고자 합니다.
This exhibition is a special international invitational project, established following the Declaration of Cultural and Tourism Exchange Cooperation between the Chungnam Cultural Tourism Foundation and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Korea. By inviting Peter Uchnár, a preeminent Slovak illustrator, we are honored to introduce the contemporary art of Central Europe to our audience. This exhibition holds profound significance as a cornerstone for future international exchanges, aiming to share the artistic heritage of Chungnam with Slovakia in the coming years.
Peter Uchnár is a leading figure in the world of Slovak illustration, widely recognized for his iconic cover art and illustrations for global literary classics such as 「Gulliver’s Travels」 and 「Peter Pan」. As a prominent artist in the European illustration scene, he has been honored with the BIB (Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava) Golden Apple Award and has received the "Most Beautiful Books in the Slovak Republic" award four times. His work presents a dreamlike and fantastical narrative through a unique style that seamlessly integrates illustration, painting, and printmaking techniques into a modern visual language.
Most importantly, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter the distinct aesthetic sensibility and narrative depth of Central Europe, which is seldom seen in Korea. Based on his exquisite descriptive power, Uchnár’s work showcases a singular artistic realm where "realism" and a "fantasticality" that delves into the depths of the human psyche strangely coexist. The gravity-defying fluidity, distorted space-time, and ethereal backgrounds of his artworks allow viewers to move beyond familiar reality and immerse themselves in a long-forgotten subconscious.
Beyond merely introducing Slovak contemporary art to a domestic audience, this exhibition seeks to build an artistic exchange network between Chungnam and the Slovak Republic. By securing a foothold for cultural and artistic exchange in Central Europe, we aspire to lead the contemporary culture of Chungnam’s arts alongside a diverse array of international artists in the future.
