Exhibition Introduction
This exhibition follows the traces of brushwork and color texture in Choi Duk Hyu’s paintings, exploring the space where his sensibility is formed. The blue-green tones that stand out on the canvas go beyond a simple choice of color or the goal of representing an object; they can be read as a state in which time, experience, and formative thought are accumulated. Rather than focusing on what is depicted, attention is given to how it is perceived and how it is left on the canvas.
Having passed through an era of turbulence, his life does not appear directly in his work but seeps into gaze and sensation, revealing not events but the accumulation of time. His practice is grounded in the nature of Korea while engaging with Western modernism, and his restrained colors and brushstrokes form a stable structure and condensed density.
The exhibition is composed around rocks, mountains, and the sea. The works contain not a specific moment but the traces of accumulated sensations, and the blue hues penetrate the canvas, creating depth and rhythm. Here, nature is not an object of representation but a state where formative thought intersects and a space where sensation resides.
“Where Blue Stroke Breathes” refers to a state of texture formed by overlapping external formative language, Korean sensibility, and the artist’s personal time. Viewers are invited to follow color and texture rather than form, and to be drawn into the density of time and sensation permeating the canvas.
